How Dogs Get Lost

Although circumstances vary, there really are only a few basic ways that dogs get lost. Knowing how dogs become lost and what kind of escape artist you have can help you take preventative measures to ensure that your pet stays safely at home. Based on what I’ve observed during my ten-year career as a pet detective, here are the top five ways that dogs become separated from their families, including personality types – often, a dog’s personality determines how he will become lost.

THE HOUDINI – the dog that works hard to escape.

Some dogs are born with wanderlust and actively look to escape. When dogs aren’t spayed or neutered, the urge to escape and mate is often strong enough to motivate them to do whatever it takes to get out of a yard. Usually, they go over or underneath a fence.
