Recently, I found an interesting on-line discussion about searching for lost pets. Someone asked, “If your pet was lost, how long would you look for him?” It was intriguing to see how pet owners answered the question. Some of the answers provided a glimpse into why so many stray dogs and cats sit in animal shelters and are never claimed. Here’s how pet owners answered the question and my italicized comments to their replies:
“4ever.”
Although this sounds noble, the fact is that the majority of pet owners stop checking their local shelter after two weeks.
“As a child, I lived in a rural area and lost my cat. He never came back, but I kept looking for a year.”
I wonder what method this person used to “look” for the lost cat. Did he or she ask permission from neighbors to search under and in everything in their yards? Lost cats require a detailed physical search of their territory.
